Late in her life, my Mom, was challenged with dementia. Her memories from long ago were quite vivid bringing a smile to her face and tears to her eyes. But more recent memories were difficult for her to remember. I found, through a series of experiments, that I could connect with her using children’s books covering subjects from her childhood….World War II, The Great Depression and life on the farm in the early 1900’s. I was surprised to find these books and pleased that they connected with her.
My Mom grew up on a farm near Niagara Falls, NY. Her family were Truck Farmers growing vegetable that they sold at market. This is the farmhouse. They get ALOT of snow near Niagara Falls!
An amazing book I read with my Mom to reconnect with her childhood home was Let’s Go Home by Cynthia Rylant! Each page offers the opportunity to dig up memories that are buried deep and learn more about her childhood home.
The book takes a peek into the different rooms of the house. The illustrations are full of delightful activity, and the script paints a picture of the activity going on in each room.
